I had negative thoughts about sales and salespeople. In college, all I took was art classes. I thought business was boring and that sales tactics were manipulative. I had a lot of bad sales experiences, including buying a car where they took my keys and wouldn’t let me leave the dealership until I protested vociferously. When I got home from that car dealership, I felt like I needed a shower. Yuck!

When I got out of college, while I was waiting to be a famous artist, I took a sales job at a gallery. I learned that sales is just as creative as art. You’re telling people about products and benefits and offering brilliant solutions for them.

My boss gave me praised me and told me that he liked the way I handled my clients. I felt accomplished, grew my revenue and created lasting relationships with my customers. Lastly, sales skills will give you lifetime value in your business.

Funny thing is, most people believe that great salespeople are born with natural gifts. The myth makes many people believe that the most successful people in sales have their natural talents. And sure, there’s some truth to a person’s natural abilities affecting their sales skills. But the real truth is, sales skills can be learned by anyone, regardless of background or experience. With the right amount of practice and the proper mindset, you can develop the confidence and abilities needed to excel in sales and beyond. I know I was able to, and you and I are a lot alike. All it takes is time, patience, and dedication. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself naturally utilizing your newfound sales skills in everyday situations.

By practicing active listening, you can build stronger relationships and offer solutions that resonate with your prospects. Make sure to focus on what they’re saying, ask clarifying questions, and resist interrupting.
