From Starving Student to Business Owner

The first business I ever started was a gift company. I was 19 years old in college and I sold giftware on the Venice boardwalk in Los Angeles on the weekends. Once I got a taste of being my own boss, creating my business hours, and being the architect of my own life, I was hooked. I never looked back.

Habit #1: Time Empowerment

One of the most important habits successful businesswomen adopt is effective “time empowerment.” Yes, you read it right. I’m not a fan of time management but I absolutely love time empowerment.

Successful people prioritize their tasks and set aside blocks of time to focus on what’s most important. Successful women know that time is a limited resource. This means that calendars, planners, and time-blocking apps are essential for organizing their days. By managing your time wisely, you’ll be able to ensure productivity and make the most of every moment.

Habit #2: Setting Clear, Measurable Goals

Successful businesswomen understand the power of clear, measurable goals. They also regularly track their progress, celebrate small wins, and make adjustments when necessary. This means that you should be constantly reviewing and refining your goals so that your strategies remain aligned with your goals. Make sure to track both your short-term and long-term goals and remember that any failures are just temporary obstacles.

Habit #3: Building a Strong Network

I always say how networking is a fundamental aspect of business success. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of attending and hosting numerous networks and events. This has allowed me to meet so many incredible people. Successful businesswomen also know that building and nurturing professional relationships can lead to new opportunities, collaborations, and shared knowledge. Whether through industry events, online communities, or my other personal favorite—mentorships—you must actively connect with like-minded professionals. By establishing a solid network, you’ll only gain more access to valuable insights, mentorship, and the support needed to navigate the challenges of business ownership. Habit #4: Prioritizing Self-Care and Mental Health

Maintaining physical and mental well-being is paramount. Successful women prioritize self-care by incorporating exercise, meditation, or relaxation into their routines. It’s vital that you understand how taking time for yourself will help you stay focused, resilient, and ready to tackle challenges.

Habit #5: Continuous Learning and Skill Development

Successful businesswomen are lifelong learners. They constantly invest in their personal growth through courses, reading, and staying up-to-date with industry trends. Whether it’s acquiring new skills or deepening their knowledge, continuous learning ensures you stay competitive and adaptable in an ever-changing business landscape.

While I was building my business, I was the “seminar queen.”. People even made fun of me because I was attending seminars every weekend. Now I love virtual learning and gleaning information online to build my business.

Habit #6: Taking Calculated Risks

Risk-taking most often leads to newfound successes, but it’s important to be smart and wise about it. Successful businesswomen aren’t afraid to step out of their comfort zones, taking calculated risks to propel their businesses forward. You’ll need to practice doing plenty of research when it comes to challenges and rewards so you can make the best-informed decisions at the time.

Habit #7: Delegation and Building a Strong Team

A key to sustainable success is knowing when and how to delegate. Successful businesswomen build strong, capable teams and trust others to handle tasks. They understand that empowering others leads to better results and allows them to focus on high-priority tasks. With this mentality, you’ll need to put together a team of skilled professionals to help make sure you’re able to scale your business for long-term success.
